Black Flag Leather Goods
Canada
Приєднався 19 жов 2020
My name is Tim. I am the founder and leather crafter behind Black Flag Leather Goods.
In July of 2020, I ordered a basic leatherworking kit from Amazon and my first order of leather. The quality of the tools was poor at best, but it didn’t matter; I was hooked right from the first cut I made.
My first piece looked the same as every leather worker’s first: a rectangular bifold wallet made of cheap leather with uneven stitch lines, crooked cuts, and the ugliest saddle stitching you can imagine. From there, every hole punched, every stitch I’ve made, and edge burnished has been a learning experience. With the help of an experienced crafter and amazing friend, the quality of each piece I created was noticeably better. Before long, I had people inquiring about my creations. And now that I've learned quite a bit from the leatherworking community, I want to pay it forward in the form of this UA-cam channel to help others.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with the WeCreat Vision. I did have a previous laser; however, it now lives on the floor, tucked away in a corner.
The WeCreat has been an absolute game changer for me. It is so user friendly and really just makes laser cutting/engraving accessible to almost everyone. The addition of a full enclosure, auto-focus, and a camera to line everything up truly make this the best diode laser you can get.
If you are in the market, I'd definitely recommend it.

My Popular Sunglasses Case Template - Now in Acrylic!
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 місяці тому
I've partnered with Hand & Sew to bring you these amazing acrylic leather templates. Printing out paper templates works well, but if it's something that you're making over and over again, it's just easier to have a hard, reusable template that you can toss down on your leather and trace out. Especially in the case of a template such as this sunglasses case, where it is bigger than a sheet of pa...
This Punching Board Will FIX your Saddle Stitch!

I've been using this thin rubber punching mat since I started leather working. It worked absolutely fine... Until it didn't. And "fine" is not the standard that I generally reach for in my leather work. In a world of cool designs, glass edges, and amazing leathers, your stitching should be on point. After making the switch to the OKA Punching Board, it became pretty clear that this was a missin...

Leather Tattoo Machine First Look
Переглядів 12 тис.5 місяців тому
There are a lot of cool leather tools out there but nothing like the Leather Tattoo Machine. It's really the first of its kind. Where other leather tools are simply variations on tools that have been around forever, the Leather Tattoo Machine is truly a novel tool. It's also a hell of a lot of fun to work with. Dennis over at @21gramsleathergoods21 hit it out of the park with this idea. There a...

Question..do you recommend punching through single layers of leather that are to be stitched together or double at the same time? I like your video and will be watching more as I get further into leather work.
I don't know if Berman Leather is still in business, because it has been a while, but they always had very nice stuff at good prices. And yeah FORGET trying to stamp or shape chrome-tanned leather! Other random notes: garment-weight leather can be sewn on a home machine for the most part, for all you costumers out there. 😊
It is not a brushless motor. Those brushes with the springs are replacement brushes for the motor.
i like to 3d print my templates
This is click bait! His advice is basic common sense things. What a waste of time.
Do you still feel as pleased with the machine as you did when you did the review? (It's now 2 years later.)
Thanks to you I bought a set! Can't wait to receive them. Looks like they will arrive in about 10 days from ordering, my confirmation-tracking said. The seller has gotten very good with delivery.
Always so helpful!
For those with issues on the size (like I did) you may need to print your cutouts in landscape mode. I noticed after I did the cutouts that they seemed very small for a wallet. It was my first attempt at leatherworking so I didn't think anything of it until I cut it all out. There's a noticeable size difference printing in portrait or landscape mode. The bad part is the "measurement" included in the pdf comes out perfect even in portrait mode so I thought it was all good.
Really surprised by your approach. You say that maybe they're both just white glue but proceed to use them for burnishing and DON'T try to glue anything with them? That is kinda weird.
I’d be happy to make my Amazon purchase through your links but unfortunately many of them (eg the sandpaper) refuse to ship to Israel & others don’t qualify for free shipping, so I have to search out substitutes.
Is it better to use waxed thread or plain? Because when i use wax thread, my stitches all look different and each stitch twists in a weird way because of the wax
Premium feel is a good explanation. Acquiring such top quality treasures gives the feeling you're set for life. Happy new knife, it's beautiful! I am very happy with my chisels and blades from Crimson Hides.
I’m curious to try pasting a pattern onto poster-sized corrugated sheets of poly plastic. If the edges will hold up to repeated tracing, that may be a compromise between the cereal boxes and 3-D printing.
You're out here living the good leather life. Thanks. I subscribed.
Thanks sir. I hav been using the pump-style. Gonna order some Grogs.
Wet and dry "sand paper", all you need to do is just wash it in water and a soft brush, then let it dry - done.
Haha actually?? I'm trying that. It makes sense.
Be much easier to see if you could focus the camera !
What in the name of Odin is a stitching pony?! I gotta Google that.....
I am thinking of getting into leather craft, and I am really unsure about how to start and what tools my money's worth is. I have seen some of your videos and started to look online for some tools, and found oka factory from Japan and saw they have beginner kits. Have you maybe seen their tools or maybe know something about them. As I live in South Africa and don't know of any good quality tools in South Africa so I am looking to get some to import. Your videos really have been intriguing me and made me excited to start with leather craft.
Hey! Thank you for watching my videos! OKA tools are good quality. I didn't know they made kits, but I have a few tools of theirs and really like them.
So mix elmers with silicone glove hand cream to dilute the stickiness and its all good?
Great info, thanks for the video, and the link.🔥👍
Bro why is it so dark
Yet another laser thats only available in the US or Canadia :( So little choice down here. I wish these reviews would start with where they are available.
Letters size printer paper isn’t Available where I live. Do I need to make any adjustments to the pattern when printing on A4 paper or will the actual dimensions remain the same on the print out?
Stay away from tandy high cost tools. They are garbage... Ask me how I know 😢
My xTool P2 came with aluminum slats. I never understood why aluminum, but I upgraded to a honeycomb bed as soon as I could. Game changer.
I guess maybe it doesn't matter as much since the majority of people are using more solid materials to cut and engrave 🤷♂️ I'm stoked to hear it's a game changer though!
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods I haven't used my slats since. Also, having a camera to position magnets to get the leather as flat as possible is amazing. Maybe throw a small battery light in there when you have dark leather.
I was actually wondering if I could splice in some more led strips haha....
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoods Not a terrible idea. I just add a small light if I need it, but rarely do.
That's probably the easier approach
Ok so I'm going to treat myself soon and I'm debating laser or clicker press. What are your thoughts?
Clicker is definitely faster. If you're cutting the exact same pattern over and over it's the way to go. Ordering dies is expensive though so if you're making all kinds of different stuff I'd say laser.
@1:30 😊ah, the simple pleasures in life that get us through the day to day.
It was killing me to leave it on there until I filmed the review 😂
I got a Wecreat 20W and have used it for a month. I love it and agree with your review. The only complaint is that the hose is too short. I bought extra ventilation hose at Home Depot. Love the software. I import SVG files I create in adobe illustrator. I have the same issue with the dark leather. I was going to put my camping lantern on top to shine more light. I haven’t tried it yet, but guessing it will help.
The hose is definitely short. I had extra dryer ducting I was using from the previous laser so I just fed it into that haha.
Thank you for sharing! Totally interested 🤙🏼
Thanks for watching!
How big is the bed of the machine? Is it large enough to cut out an average sized or larger leather tote, for example? Thank you for your review - hugely informative!!
I think the bed is 420mm x 290mm. I'm going to say it'd be too small for a leather tote unfortunately.
Great review and demo. LOVE the auto-focus. My next machine will definitely be one of these all-enclosed units. Quick note about wavy leather - get it wet before putting it in the laser cutter. Works best with veg tan. Also cuts down on the smell. After cutting, use a >>soft<< toothbrush and squirt bottle of diluted dish soap to clean up the loose soot. If the engraving is light, just spray the soap on the piece, then use your hand under running water to wash away the surface soot. I usually put my pieces on a box fan to dry before stain & assembly.
Thanks for watching! I'm definitely going to try that!
Getting new tools is always exciting! Nice review. I hope things are going well.
Thank you!! Things are going alright!
Have you tried on cow hair leather??
Oh god no.... But now I kind of want to... It does have ventilation!
@@BlackFlagLeatherGoodswould love to see that!
Oohh not sure the smell would be tolerable or baked into the grain of the leather.
Thank God you lost the unboxing footage. Go Canada
Haha! Some people like it! It would have been quick anyway. It came assembled in a giant box.
can you wet the leather slightly before cutting?
Good question! I'll give it a try and get back to you.
Thanks very much for this review!
Thanks for watching!!
How many times did I say it blows the other laser out of the water? 🤦♂️
Nice.
You really did not show how to actually cut pattern out of leather.
Tim, I've followed you since I began leathercraft and enjoyed your videos. So sorry to hear about your wife's health issue and thank you for sharing with us. Your family will be in our prayers. Life throws these things at us and family is always first. I understand how you want to keep going with the craft during hardtimes because somehow it sothes us if only for a moment. Keep the faith and we will be thinking of you.
That first one is super-useful adjoining two pieces of leather when you don't have enough leather to make a one-piece panel. It looks good, but doesn't work well for thin pieces of leather.
Thank you for putting the difference in laymans terms so everyone can understand. Not just beginners. Furniture purchacers of "all leather" furniture need to get more info

Elmer's and other school glues are made from casien, which is derrived from milk and are nontoxic, which is why they are used in schools. Other white glues or "pva" glues are made with polyvinylacetate and are supposedly nontoxic also.
Hi Tim, thanks for this video, it is really helpful. I had a couple of questions - - What thickness do you use for the leather in this? - When you are marking and punching the stitch holes with the punching irons, you went from the inside and punched them outward. Is this always the way it should be done or do you ever punch from the outside inwards? Thanks again for the video!
Great tips. These can be used for anything youre selling..
